8 october 2013 such is the unknown

sunny day at pond 2

...picnic lunch by lake under trees... men with plastic rowing boat and lifebuoy are doing something in or on the water... one in red shorts and bathing cap is swimming to erect or do something that i can't see beyond the bushes... someone is shouting instructions to the others... most of this has emerged from a van labelled 'Ranger' (who i learn is a woman)...

...soon others arrive... one with a handheld... and then i go nearer to ask what they are doing...

...i gather that the one swimming is a diver who is searching for a lost object... but he cant find it amongst water plants and mud... guided by the one who is shouting instructions from the bank... so eventually they pack up and drive away...

while this is going on they tell me of other such searches under water for lost objects... such as wedding rings... and occasionally bodies... the one diving tells me of an object which felt like decayed flesh... but it was a rolled up carpet that was horrible to hold...

while i watched the one diving disappeared for about about 10 or 20 seconds and came up with ball.,. and then a bottle... but not what they were searching for...

...and now that they are gone it's as of this event didn't happen... as the more normal events that comprise life on earth restored the impression that all is well and in order... predictable and safe and not dangerous... but the presence of these people... trained and ready with a portable boat on a van roof with ropes and lifebouys etc tells a different story... of a world moving in space and full of hidden surprises beyond the knowledge or imagination of anyone... but one we can nevertheless cope with... such is the unknown and such is our ability to respond to it... thank goodness...
